Things To Do in Emerald

Located in the heart of Queensland’s Central Highlands, Emerald is a vibrant rural hub known for its rich agricultural heritage, sapphire fields, striking public art, and fascinating history. Whether you're exploring the town itself or venturing out within 30 km of Emerald Cabin & Caravan Village, there’s plenty to see and do.

How Did Emerald Get Its Name?

Emerald was established in 1879 and is believed to have been named after the lush green hill just north of town known as Emerald Downs Hill. The hill’s rich green colour resembled that of an emerald gemstone, inspiring the town’s name.
Today, Emerald is known as the hub of the Central Highlands and the gateway to one of the largest sapphire fields in the Southern Hemisphere — particularly around the nearby town of Anakie.

The World’s Largest Van Gogh Sunflower Painting

Emerald was once a major sunflower-producing region, and this agricultural heritage is celebrated in spectacular style.

In Morton Park, you’ll find the world’s largest reproduction of Vincent van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers painting.

  • 🎨 Height: 25 metres
  • 🌻 Mounted on a giant easel
  • 📍 Located at the western end of Clermont Street

Right next door is the uniquely designed Emerald Visitor Information Centre, built in the shape of a straw bale — a nod to the region’s farming background. It’s the perfect place to collect brochures and plan your Central Highlands adventure.

📍 World’s biggest Van Gogh sunflower painting (25 m tall) is located here.
