Established in 1879 and named after the lush green Emerald Downs Hill, the town celebrates its sunflower-growing history with a 25-metre-high reproduction of Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh in Morton Park, alongside its uniquely designed straw bale–shaped Visitor Information Centre. Visitors can also admire the National Trust–listed Emerald Railway Station, built in 1900, and view a 250-million-year-old fossilised tree at the Town Hall. Nearby attractions include Fairbairn Dam at Lake Maraboon for fishing and water sports, peaceful botanic gardens and riverside parks, while the sapphire-rich town of Anakie in the Gemfields offers fossicking and outback adventures just west of town.
